Interview with Yazmine Fernandez from His Perfect Partner

Renee here: This week I had the opportunity to interview Yazmine Fernandez from Priscilla Oliveras’s debut contemporary romance,  His Perfect Partner.  After the interview, I could see myself hanging out on the beach with Yazmine, toes deep in sand, while sipping margaritas. Yeah, she’s a cool chick!

His Perfect Partner
Tell us a little about yourself? What’s your occupation/job? Where do you live?

Hi, I’m Yazmine Fernandez. I’m a trained dancer, lived and worked in NYC for a while, and now I’m back home in Oakton, IL, sharing my love of dance with students in the Greater Chicago area.

Did you have a nickname as a kid?

My Papi used to call me his Estrellita, his little star. Other than that, family and friends call me Yaz.

Favorite snack food?

My go to snack, especially for late night munchies…totally unhealthy, but that makes them even better—plantain chips, or platanutres as we call them in Puerto Rico.

What was the first thing that attracted you to Tomás Garcia?

Well let’s face it, Tomás is easy on the eyes, so when he first darkened my studio doorway, I’ll admit his total hotness is what got my attention. But the real, I mean like soul deep attraction? What drew me then and still draws me to him now are the confidence he exudes and his dedication to Maria. And once our lives became entwined, he’s done the same with my family. How can you not be attracted to a hunky man who puts his family first?

Do you work out?

In my line of work, you have to. Pilates and yoga, and dance several hours a day. Keeps me in shape, but also keeps me sane.

Your idea of a fun date?

At one point it would have been a night out dancing. Now, it’s a bottle of wine in front of the fire, soft music playing over the speakers, slow dancing with a particular sexy Latino.

Favorite television show?

My personal favorite is So You Think You Can Dance. Talk about raw talent and determination and power. The dancers, the choreography—absolutely amazing! My second would have to be Jane the Virgin. Classic telenovela with a tongue-in-cheek vibe. Rosa, Lilí and I usually have a gab fest after the latest episode.

Favorite dessert?

My mami’s flan, hands down. Though my middle sister Rosa’s is a close second.

Do you prefer sex under the covers or under the stars?

With Tomás, anywhere works for me.

What quality do you most admire in a man?

Loyalty. My family is important to me. If you can’t be loyal or trustworthy to me, to them, if you hurt any of my loved ones…yeah, that’s non-negotiable.

Favorite type of music or band?

Bueno, if there’s salsa, merengue or bachata playing my feet and hips can’t keep still. Must be ingrained or in my blood. But when Harry Connick Jr. sings to me, I swoon.

Your idea of a perfect after date activity?

Ha, how about breakfast in bed?

If a movie was made about your life who would you like to portray you?

Probably Roselyn Sánchez. Most recently she was in the TV show Devious Maids. Yeah, I think she could pull it off. 😉

What do you wear to bed?

Usually, a pair of pajama shorts and a comfy tee or one of Tomás’s shirts, especially if he’s out of town for work

Favorite sport? Favorite sports team?

Bueno, my baby sister Lilí is really the sports fan amongst us girls. She and Papi were the ones watching football and baseball. Mostly baseball. So, she’d kill me if I didn’t say my favorite team is the Chicago Cubs. You should have seen that girl celebrating when they won the World Series last year! Crazy times!

Yasmine, thanks for letting me interview you! It was fun and revealing. And one day we need to sit down together and watch a few episodes of Jane the Virgin.

Now let’s play This or That with Priscilla! A quick game of which would you choose.

  1.  Tom Cruise or Tom Brady? NEITHER I’d prefer dinner with Tom Hanks or a night out with a young Tom Selleck.
  2.  Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth? Oooh, tough choice here. Love Evans as Captain America, but love Hemsworth in pretty much everything!
  3. Superman or Batman? Superman, no doubt about it.
  4. Coke or Pepsi? Coke. If they only have Pepsi, I’m ordering water or an adult beverage.
  5. Apple or PC? Apple all the way.
  6. Early bird or night owl? More night owl, but I’ve been known to still be awake to greet the early birds.
  7. Kit Kat or Snickers? How about you take one, I take the other and we share?
  8. Main course or dessert? Probably dessert. One of the best mornings of the year is the day after Thanksgiving when my girls and I eat leftover pie for breakfast.
  9. Tropical Island or Big City? Oh man, do I have to choose? For relaxation, a beach on an island; for excitement and energy and vibe, Big City for me.
  10. Comedy or Suspense movie? Definitely comedy. I’m not a horror flick person, I’m a big chicken.

Pris, Thanks for playing This or That! I hear ya on eating dessert for breakfast after a holiday.  Really, why not? And I stay as far away from horror flicks as I can get.

His Perfect Partner will be released on September 26th and is available for preorder, and it just received a starred review from PW!
