Guilty Little Pleasures 1

I don’t know about you, but twenty-four hours in a day just doesn’t cut it for me any more. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time to get everything done. Work. Kids. Laundry. Pets. Cleaning. Laundry. Writing. Marital Bliss. Laundry. You’re with me, right? It’s exhausting!

So… every once in a while I climb into bed early, and indulge in what I like to call one of my guilty little pleasures.

OMG. Get your minds out of the gutter. I’m talking about READING here! I grab a book from my ever-overflowing TBR pile or fire up my Kindle app and lose myself in someone else’s world of words. If I’m feeling especially indulgent I’ll really treat myself and pair a book with a beverage.

Since I’m going to assume a lot of you are like me (it’s okay, you don’t have to admit that you own my kind of crazy!) I wanted to suggest some optimal matches for your reading and sipping pleasure. Some of these are books I’ve read and can’t wait to visit again and a couple of them are new ones I’m looking forward to!

Julie James – The Thing About Love

I fell in love with Julie James while reading her FBI/US Attorney series. Her sassy, wicked banter and the right amount of steam guarantee a satisfying read.

Every.    Single.    Time.

I’m looking forward to this one. I haven’t started it yet, but based on the cover and the awesome blurb, I’ll probably enjoy it while sipping on something like the Lollipop Cocktail with cherry juice and champagne from FastDrinks.com.

Alice Clayton – Buns

From the moment I cracked the cover on her first redhead book, Alice Clayton has held one-click status with me. I’m excited to get my hands on these buns for an obvious reason… they’re sure to be the gateway to another fun romp through Hudson Valley.  Sheesh, what did you think I was going to say there? Too bad we’re not talking about the Cocktail series… those books came with obvious sip-along suggestions. I suppose buns make me think of wheat. And wheat makes me think of my favorite unfiltered wheat beer… an ice-cold Blue Moon with a slice of orange. Cheers!

Diana Gabaldon – Outlander

If you haven’t seen it covering the shelves at the bookstore, heard friends talking about it, or caught the series on Starz yet, climb out from under the rock where you’ve been living and BUY THIS BOOK! Sorry, that sounded harsh. I was late to discover the Outlander series. One of the perks was that I could dive in and read them all back to back to back without having to wait for the next one to come out. But you’ll blaze through them so fast eventually you’ll catch up because no matter how fast Ms. Gabaldon writes, it will never be fast enough. I’m recommending this series for a couple of reasons. First, because it’s that damn good. And second, because in a few short weeks I’ll be getting my own well-read copy autographed by Ms. Gabaldon herself when I attend the Desert Dreams conference in Phoenix. Romance Chick Christy will be there with me. We’ll post photographic evidence, I promise. As for what to sip on while drinking in every word on the 800+ pages? I feel like this is kind of a “DUH” moment… single malt Scottish whisky, of course!

Kristan Higgins – The Best Man

Because it’s Spring, and because it’s wedding season, and because, well, just because it’s Kristan Higgins and she never fails to make me LOL at least once or twice in each of her books, I’m recommending one of my favorite Blue Heron books… The Best Man. A perfect blend of humor, heat and heart, it will leave you oohing and ahhing at all the right parts. Best paired with something light, sweet and bubbly, I think I’d do a raspberry moscato spritzer. Per the recipe on drinkedin.net, just mix equal parts Moscato and lemon-lime soda then throw in some frozen raspberries. I don’t even add any sweetener. Mmm!

There you have it… some book recommendations along with some ideas to sip along while you savor spring romance. Makes me feel like putting on my jammies right now and climbing into bed. After stopping by the liquor store first…

Happy Reading!
